How To Cope

If you are in an abusive relationship, there are things you can do to better cope with your living situation. It’s important for you to find healthy ways to express your feelings and to learn techniques to help you calm down when you feel stressed or depressed.

Here are some ideas:

  • Write your feelings in a journal.
  • Listen to music.
  • Draw, paint or do some other craft or art project.
  • Practice deep breathing to calm down.
  • Talk to a friend, relative or a counselor.
  • Imagine a quiet place.
  • Make a safety plan

All of these coping techniques can be taught to and shared with your children. This will provide them with tools to calm down, express their feelings in a healthy way and handle difficult situations. It will also provide you with an opportunity to bond with your children in a positive way. This will help to build your children’s trust and sense of security.
